As a result we are raising the trainee cost this year - the first time in four years. We are keeping our volunteer fees the same as we need sufficient volunteers to run the trips. So our fees for 2011 are:

Helpers and LSP (sailors) £40 for the 4 days.
Crew (trainees) £130 for the 4 days.

For crew this covers all accommodation, sailing tuition, insurance and refreshments including one meal out at a restaurant. The only extra money needed is some cash for drinks ashore and any gifts that an individual might wish to purchase.

For helpers and LSP it covers food and accommodation for the trip and the one restaurant meal.

Helpers and LSP to pay skippers on the trips. Cash or cheque.
Crew (trainees) to send cheques once confirmed a place to Stephen Tobutt.

Please make cheques payable to Gemini Sailing Project.
<br With a reasonable breeze we sailed through the North Channel towards Portsmouth and then tacked our way towards Cowes. We tied up at West Cowes Marina and after an excellent dinner we retired to the local hostelry. A live band was playing and all had a great time listening and dancing!! to the group.

Day 2

The forecast was for a warm day with no wind until the evening. Therefore the crew went shopping followed by a proper cup of coffee ashore. We bumbled out into the Solent late morning and motored towards Osborne Bay where we dropped anchor. At that point someone ( the Skipper ) suggested swimming. Chris, Helen, Peter and Wayne all took the plunge into the warm ( Icy ) Solent. After our bracing swim lunch was served and eaten on deck. After lunch there were trips around Donald Searle for photos and instruction in driving the Coypu with a very temperamental outboard motor. The wind then arrived and we had a gentle sail back to East Cowes for dinner and entertainment.

Day 3

The forecast was for a fresh wind and our plan was to go to Yarmouth for the last evening. We set sail mid morning and after leaving the river we put 2 reefs in the mainsail. Unfortunately during this evolution Andrew Downey slipped and fell injuring his back. After discussion with Andrew we turned round and went back to East Cowes. We arranged for the paramedics to meet us and Andrew was taken to the hospital for a check up. Wayne kindly volunteered to keep Andrew company. As we couldn’t now sail without Andrew we all took a bus to Ryde and proceeded to enjoy the delights of Ryde, crazy golf, amusements, ice creams and hovercraft watching. Andrew and Wayne joined us in Ryde after being given the all clear from the hospital. As we had failed to get to Yarmouth we had our traditional last night meal ashore at the Lifeboat Inn in East Cowes. A superb meal was had with the staff looking after us fantastically.

Day 4

We awoke with a strong south westerly wind ( gusts of 30 knots ) and screamed back to the Hamble. We arrived back in glorious sunshine. Yet again another great trip albeit eventful. It was good to see the crew arriving, some new to me: David, Robert, Graham, Sandy, Paul, Philip, Michael and the two Peters.

After an excellent lunch to charge our batteries, everyone was shown around, and a start was made getting the boat ready for sea. We were booked in to Yarmouth for the first night, so we eagerly got a move on, practising our tacking skills down the western Solent.

After a bit of shopping and showering, we had a splendid meal on board, and then went to our favourite hostelry ashore. There was no live music this time (see report on Trip 1), but most of the crew took advantage of the pool table.

The second day we returned up the Solent, and decided to go up to the top of Southampton Water so that we could look at the boats attending the Boat Show – very colourful and spectacular. Although there had been a strong wind warning forecast we had a very gentle sail back down to West Cowes,. We just had time for a shower before our evening meal aboard. After dinner we were welcomed again by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, their pool table getting much used by all.

We awoke on Day Three to very strong winds, so we treated ourselves to another hour’s shopping before donning all our safety gear. The wind was too strong for us to go to Portsmouth, so we tucked ourselves round the corner in Osborne Bay where we dropped the anchor and had a nice lunch. On our way back to West Cowes the crew valiantly put up the staysail for a couple of tacks, but the gusting wind soon persuaded us to take it down again. We headed gratefully back in to harbour and had a very enjoyable meal in the Lifeboat Inn.

The last day saw us back in Universal Shipyard, tired but triumphant. I thank the LSP and the helpers for their hard work, but especially the crew, all of whom had a wonderful time.

Skipper John F

20th Anniversary Reunion Weekend

Skipper – Chris Matthews, MATE – Duncan Farrant
Port Watch - Pete, Steve, Sheila, Richard and Alan
Starboard Watch - Andrew, Nick, Wayne, Derek, Frank and Maggie

Written by Maggie Cole...

I arrived onboard Donald Searle at 1830 and it was super to see so many familiar faces as well as some new ones. Sadly, some of the volunteer crew dropped out for various reasons, so there were just 13 of us. Lucky for some.

Donald Searle was moored alongside the Pontoon close to the Pontoon Gate and was, therefore, easy to reach. There was plenty of hustle and bustle getting everything onboard and then storing it all in the correct place, as well as bagging a bunk. Just before we set sail Nick Nell from the Rona Trust, congratulated all of us on our support to Gemini over the last 20 years and wished us a great trip.

We slipped the moorings at Universal Shipyard at 2015. The weather forecast had not been good, but, miraculously, all changed at the last minute and it was almost perfect for the whole trip, although perhaps a little more wind at times would have been welcome.

There was a perfect sunset over Fawley and we almost stopped off at Cowes for the night as we would have normally done, but then remembered that this trip was for the volunteers! We had our first experience of putting up all the sails and after firm directions/signs from Chris, we were sailing at last! But not for too long as we were not making enough headway, so we had to motor again.

Foodwise, we started off with the usual pasties and baked potatoes, which were consumed exceedingly quickly. Starboard Watch took up their positions at about 2100 while Port Watch got their heads down. Our Watch Leader, Andrew, kept us on the straight and narrow and our spirits high with his good humour and expertise, gently guided by Chris.

There was the most beautiful moonrise just passed Yarmouth. I am sure that none of us will ever forget sailing passed The Needles with a full moon above. It was just magical. We passed a number of ships in the night and could see them and then hear them eerily chugging by in the moonlight. For most of our Watch we had to motor, but, eventually, did manage to hoist the sails before going off watch at midnight. It was such a lovely feeling being gently rocked to sleep in the bunk as Donald Searle danced over the waves. Duncan, Sheila, Andrew and me were in the after cabin and there was quite a competition as to who snored the loudest between Andrew and Sheila, but I felt Sheila had the edge!!

We were back on Watch at 0400, and lucky enough to see a perfect sunrise at 0503, but had to turn on the engine as the wind was too light. It was to be the start of a memorable day with a clear, sunny morning, if somewhat chilly. Regular mugs of hot chocolate and biscuits kept us going through the Watch and finishing with a delicious breakfast of scrambled egg and baked beans, which was very welcome. We all took turns on the wheel, as look-outs, making a brew and adjusting the sails and sheets as necessary.

Some of us had a few hours’ kip before being woken up to be told by Chris that we were entering the waters off Cherbourg. For me, I really felt a sense of achievement that we had reached France. Once we passed through the breakwater, we heaved a sign of relief and started thinking of hot croissants and delicious French coffee, which spurred us on even more.

We went alongside the Marina pontoon at 1035 with Peter showing great skill on the wheel and guided in by Chris and Duncan. A perfect operation. Chris wanted to put on the sail covers, but there was almost a mutiny and I am afraid he lost! There was a Hobby Tiger National Event, so as we were near the entrance we saw these fine catamarans heading out to race, as well as a steady stream of yachts, fishing boats, motor boats, dinghies coming in and going out of the harbour. The tide was ebbing fast. The weather was wonderful with blue skies and hot sunshine.

Most of us went ashore for a welcome shower at the Marina, followed by a 1664 Blanc beer at the Yacht Club, just to help us get acclimatised! Shoals of huge mullet could be seen in the Marina swimming so close to the surface. It was fascinating watching their antics. We returned for lunch onboard and once well fed and watered, Sheila and I were given the task by Chris of finding a suitable restaurant for dinner. In the end, we split up into 2 groups, the culture group (Andrew, Peter, Nick, Wayne, Duncan, Chris, Derek and Frank) that wanted to have a look at the nearby Submarine Museum and the shoppers. Cherbourg is a bustling port with a maze of small shops, wonderful fishmongers, bakers, delicatessens, butchers, fashion shops, bars AND restaurants etc! Steve, Richard, Sheila, Alan and I explored many of the streets. We all said how nice it was to see families, young and not so young people enjoying themselves, shopping, having a drink, playing with the children.

Sheila did a brilliant job in finding La Cendre restaurant and the young woman there could not believe that we wanted to book dinner for 13, but after a phone call she agreed. After our hard work we all thought it was time for a drink, so we found a bar close to the beautiful Cherbourg theatre and sat outside in the sun and consumed some ice cold beers! We had to be back at the boat by 1800, boat time, 1900 shore time! Enough time for a wash and brush up. I was given the task of navigating the way back to the restaurant, so with fingers crossed and a little help from my friends, we located La Cendre again. We all sat at a huge oblong table and proceeded to enjoy a most scrumptious dinner with lots of local wine, plenty of warm French bread and fish soup, duck pate, rillettes of shrimp etc to start with, followed by local fish and meat dishes and a selection of the most delicious desserts. I had Floating Island which was a sort of meringue floating in a sea of creamy custard, not so good for the figure, but perfect! We were looked after so well by the restaurant staff with their good humour and serving piping hot food with no delays. After coffee and feeling very full, we walked back to the Marina, It was a calm evening with wonderful reflections in the water of the various yachts in the basin. We all felt in need of a nightcap, so stopped yet again at the Yacht Club, then back to Donald Searle, where most of us crashed out for the night, trying to catch up with our sleep from the night before.

Sunday dawned to the delicious aroma of breakfast cooking and we all ate heartily. Sheila, Alan, Steve, Richard and myself were tasked with visiting the supermarket for last minute supplies of cheese, wine, sultanas, requested by Peter for his bread and butter pudding, and bleach!! We set off at 1150 and headed for Alderney, sailing for just under an hour until 1253 . It was a grey morning and the visibility could have been better, but it was warm and dry. We followed the coast, passing the controversial nuclear power station on our port, and en route had a delicious snack of the croissants and pain au chocolat that Frank had bought from the local boulangerie before leaving. The tastes were out of this world and yet again not good for the figure, but what the hell!

We had to motor for the last lap of the trip as the wind dropped and the currents became stronger, reaching Braye harbour on Alderney at 1530. We picked up a mooring buoy close to the sea wall and then had another gastronomic success of a lunch with l ocal cheeses, French bread, red wine etc, watching the local sightseeing train chug along the coastal route, blowing its whistle. Chris summoned the water taxi and after 2 trips we all arrived safely ashore at 1650, except for Peter who had volunteered to stay onboard and prepare a roast lamb dinner. While we waited for our ‘ferry’, 3 French yachts arrived all about the same time all sailed single handed and in turn they very skilfully picked up the mooring buoys first time, watched in awe by all of us from a distance.

On reaching the harbour side we walked up the hill passing a couple of pubs, hotels and new buildings being erected. The island is very green with lots of beautiful flowers and shrubs and plenty of birds (the feathered kind!), although there were notices around saying that there was a severe water shortage. Looking out to sea it was possible to see on the horizon a yellow mist which is apparently the result of the emissions from the steady stream of diesel driven ships passing by, which was rather worrying. We reached the shops, although thankfully closed, and it was interesting to see there were the usual souvenir shops, estate agents, cafes, restaurants and mini supermarkets. The houses are all very traditional in their style and really quite attractive, obviously using the local stone. We made our way back to the harbour, but not before dropping in to the local pub for a final glass of their local brew to set us on our way.

We arrived back onboard at about 1700 to the wonderful aroma of roast lamb! Peter told us that we were early, so Chris suggested that we finished the last bottles of red wine and we all readily agreed! The final dinner was a treat, tender slices of lamb, lots of veg and most importantly gravy, made with pasta mix, which according to Sheila is another name for flour, but you pay more for it!! This was followed by the best bread and butter pudding I have ever tasted with lashings of custard. What a treat!

Sadly, we left Braye at 2145 and hoisted the sails at 2205. Starboard Watch got our heads down first as we started our voyage back across the Channel to home. It seemed no time before it was midnight and time to be on Watch again, but we were SAILING. Hurrah! There were many more ships passing by through the early morning and we had to be on our guard at all times, with Duncan keeping a weather eye. We all had a go on the wheel and Donald Searle was cutting through the waves and reaching 9 knots on occasions. What a wonderful feeling! It was a long 4 hours, but an enjoyable one. Again, plenty of hot chocolate and biscuits kept us alive and kicking, plus the singing of sea shanties with Nick and Derek taking the lead, ably supported by Wayne, Duncan, Nick and Frank. An interesting breakfast was served by Steve at 0800 of delicious porridge, then scrambled egg and a mixture, out of a tin, consisting of baked beans, meatballs, salami etc. Evidently, it is also meant to be very good as a filling for pizzas!!

Once again with the wind slackening we decided to put the engine on at 0810 and we ended up motoring the final leg of our return trip. At 1305 we arrived safely alongside at Universal Shipyard after an absolutely awesome time. The weather had finally broken after the driest and warmest April on record. Everyone arrived at Universal Shipyards and fortunately, got on board the ‘Donald Searle’ relatively dry in between rain squalls.
After welcoming, introducing and briefing everyone on safety in the ship we had lunch, pasties and soup! The wind was a steady force 5 and the clouds threatened more rain, but we prepared for sea and set off down the Hamble. We arrived at Hamble Point buoy in Southampton Water with the wind gusting to Force 6 from the West. Andrew, Sarah and Tom (this was Tom’s first sailing trip) all worked together to hoist the No. 2 jib. The engine was turned off and we were sailing south past Calshot at 7.5 knots with Tom at the helm.

At Hamble Point, we had put a routine traffic radio call to Southampton VTS, letting them know we were outbound for the Isle-of-Wight. They told us about a large tanker inbound and to give it a wide birth. We could just see it through the rain passing Cowes entrance. We turned our navigation lights on as the visibility had reduced and the wind was increasing as a new squall blew towards us. By the time we had sailed south of the Thorn Channel, the wind was a steady gale force 8. We tacked and sailed astern of the tanker, which now had one of the large tug boats assisting it. This was all very exciting, but quite enough for our first day, so we tacked once more and sailed straight over to the Isle of Wight and moored in West Cowes Yacht Haven. We all had a good meal of sausages, mash potatoes and vegetables, followed by bananas and hot custard, yum! After we had done the washing up, Peter volunteered to look after the ship while everyone went ashore, socialising in the Anchor, with Andrew and Tom challenging some of the regulars at snooker.

Tuesday dawned, with more high winds and rain, so the morning was spent shopping in Cowes. At 11:30 we slipped our moorings and headed out into the Solent, towards Portsmouth. The wind was force 5 from the west. This time Joanna, Alison and Richard hoisted the jib while Louise assisted with the helming. It was all down wind sailing to Portsmouth, with the wind steadily increasing and pushing ‘Donald Searle’ along at over 8 knots. We dropped the jib as we turned into the small boat channel opposite the war memorial and motored into Portsmouth Harbour having been given permission by the Queen’s Harbour Master. We moored at Gun Wharf Quays and the crew had a run ashore to look at HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Mary Rose. After a beautifully cooked beef stew, potatoes and veg and then rice pudding with peaches for dessert we all went ashore for ten pin bowling. Les scored the highest with 140!

Wednesday dawned dull, misty and very little wind. We left Portsmouth and headed north west along the Solent with Stephen on the helm. As we passed Cowes the wind picked up and we sailed on toward Yarmouth. We radioed Yarmouth Harbour Master requesting a birth alongside, only to discover that there was a ferry on the slipway being repaired and that we would have to moor outside the harbour on the buoys. As there was another gale forecast we turned and headed back and went into East Cowes. Nick arranged for us to have a guided tour around the RNLI factory, where they build the inshore lifeboats. Great to see the skill and care they take in building these powerful rescue boats. That evening we had a lovely meal ashore together and finished off with singing sea shanties back on the ‘Donald Searle’.

Thursday morning we set off from East Cowes and our crack team, Andrew and Tom hoisted the jib once more, with Chris assisting on the helm. The winds were still high so we sailed up Southampton Water, following yet another tanker under tow which turned and docked at the refinery. In the afternoon with more rain threatening we sailed to the entrance to the Hamble, dropped sail and motored to our mooring at Universals. We had our last meal together, baked potatoes, curry and grated cheese followed by hot apple pie and custard. After tidying and cleaning we had group photos on deck and then had to say goodbye while dodging the rain.
My thanks go to all who helped make this another successful Gemini Sailing trip, well done. This includes Chris Matthews and Frank Pitts for their preparations before the voyage.

2007 Trip 1 Report from John Fletcher

Well, what can I say. We had a fantastic trip, even though the weather for early May was the usual strong winds and some rain. This trip was especially significant for me as I haven’t been able to come for the last 5 years. It was good to meet everyone, some for the first time (Helen Gr, Christopher, Sanker, Gerald and Keith), and to renew acquaintances with others (Helen Go, Louise, Allan and Mark).

The first night we spent in East Cowes, and was able to relax after dinner in the Lifeboat. We were up bright and early the next day, and set off in enough time to stop for lunch in Newtown Creek, where the crew took turns to look through the ships binoculars at the local wild life. As it was a Bank Holiday weekend, we decided to have the meal out on the Friday in Yarmouth, and we had a splendid welcome at the Wheatsheaf. We felt particularly privileged when a live band struck up at 9 o’clock, which prompted all the crew to “shake a leg” and “do their thing”. To see a short video click here.

The next morning we returned to West Cowes, with time to spare for people to do their shopping. Because we had had our meal out the night before, the helpers, led by Stuart and Spit, worked their collective fingers to the bone in tarting up the evening meal, so much so that it rivalled anything the local restaurants would have offered. We had a coffee on our way to Southampton. We got to universal boat yard at about lunch after lunch was over we put on our harness and went on deck and started sailing. We sailed across to cowes on the isle of wight. I done lots of tacking with Jane and working with ropes and sails we all helped out in the galley through the day. I helped with finders when mooring up for the evening. Once the evening meal was over Jane and me washed up. Then we got ready to go out for a drink and then went back to the boat, and have a hot drink and a chat with the helpers. Before I went and got into bunk and went to sleep.

Friday 5th September

We got up then went for a shower and back for breakfast then we went shopping Jane and me went with Maggie but we saw most of rest. I bought some sailing gloves and Jane bought some sailing boots once we had finished we went back to the boat and had a hot drink before we started sailing. I helped with the rope work and tacking and put up sails with John, Janet, Jane and Maggie. We did the main then the jib. At lunchtime we drop the anchor. Chris, Stuart, Jane S and Miranda went swimming at about 2.30 we all got ready to start sailing again. Jane and me help Andrew with the evening meal we went to Portsmouth for the evening. Once we had our evening meal we went for a drink then once we were back to the boat I had a hot drink and went to my bunk.

Saturday 6th September

Once we had breakfast Chris look at my log book with me then we ladies all went shopping and some of us went for a cup of coffee but Jane went back to the boat. Then once we all back on board we had a drink and at about 1.00 we got ready to go sailing at about 1.20. I was doing my log book while the rest started sailing at 2.00 we had lunch then I had a go on the helm. I done lots of tacking with help from John Leonard and the helpers what to do to go about and they done the rope work together doing the taking. Jane was the Navigator for the day. I was helmsman for the day. We went over to yarmouth for the evening. It was nice shopping. Once we were moored up in Yarmouth we all went out for the evening meal as this was our last day before we go back to the Hamble river tomorrow. Once back on board we had a coffee we had a sing song with Stuart and Miranda did something by get down and picking things up without using their hands. I went and got into my pit at 12.30.

Sunday 7th September

We had a cup of tea in our bunks that Stuart gave us. We started packing our bags and our sleeping bags. Some helpers helped the other crew who might need help. Then we had breakfast and got ready to go sailing at about 9.30 and started sail over I helped with tacking. Andrew and me prepared the lunch when we arrived to the Universal dock yard and moored up. Fiona took over from Andrew because he had to go early so we said our goodbyes. Then we all helped tidy up and put our bags on deck then chris took lots of photos of us. Chris handed out our maps and certificates then we got on Joyce and put our bags in the car. We were very tired and slept most of the way home.

I like to thank all the helpers for giving us a wonderful 4 days.

By

Janet Yeoman

<v:stroke joinstyle="miter"><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"><v:path connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" extrusionok="f"><o:lock aspectratio="t" ext="edit"><v:imagedata href="http://gemini-sailing-project.org.uk/Gemini2/photogallery2/ipage_1_0.jpg" src="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CFRANKP%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_image001.jpg"></v:imagedata></o:lock></v:path></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:stroke>

Helpers

The trips sail with a 1:1 ratio. The skipper and mate are both highly qualified yacht masters. There are also two other competent sailors who know the boat and are associated with the London Sailing Project.
The other key person is the 'advisor'. The advisor is someone who has personal or professional experience of relating to people with learning disabilities and has previous experience of being a helper on Gemini. The role of the advisor is to monitor that the day to day needs of the crew are maintained and to advice and support helpers where appropriate. We also have an assistant advisor to back them up.
The remainder of the team is made up from people from all walks of life and degrees of experience. The key thing is that all helpers work together drawing on each other's strengths and contributions to making a safe, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable trip for everyone. Interested in helping?

Crew

A maximum of 9 adults with learning disabilities go on each trip as crew members. The only extra money needed is some cash for drinks ashore and any gifts that an individual might wish to purchase.

For helpers and LSP it covers food and accommodation for the trip and the one restaurant meal.

The trips are covered by the insurance policy held by the London Sailing Project.

Trip Dates for 2007

Trip 1 - Thursday May 3rd to Sunday May 6th
Trip 2 - Monday May 7th to Thursday May 10th
Trip 3 - Monday September 17th to Thursday September 20th
Trip 4 - Friday September 21st to Monday September 24th

Let's hope for great sailing weather on all our dates!

More about the trips

Four trips each year are organised, two in the Spring and a further two in the Autumn. The crew join the boat at the Universal boatyard at 11.00 am on day one and are back at the mooring ready to go home by 4.30 pm on day four.
The destination will vary on weather and tide but a typical trip will go to Cowes and/or Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth Harbour, Gosport, Southampton water. The aim is not to go far but to provide the experience of life on board a large boat and as many sailing experiences as possible within the time frame.
It is an adventure rather than a holiday with all crew being expected to join in with life on board and to help in the galley as well as on deck.
See a satellite view of where we sail.

Blog under construction

Well this is the start of the new Gemini Blog. We are going to try a blog this year to see if we can get something more interactive going. The old website was not getting the attention it needed. This means it is easier to keep it updated and can expand who can add things so that others can add things.
We will add the usual information about what Gemini is, who can go and what to bring plus information on individual trips and will put links to photos up. It will take a little time to set all this up but watch this space.
